Forex reserves buildup hinges on BoP surplus

Mencias The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas said the economy must consistently post a yearly surplus of about $2 billion in its balance of payments in the next five years to allow a buildup in the country’s foreign reserves. Bangko Sentral Gov. Amando Tetangco Jr. said “ the BoP surplus should not be lower than $2 billion a year in the next five years” if the central bank was to achieve its plan of bringing its reserves to the $25-billion-to-$30-billion mark. “Exports fdi [foreign direct investments] ofw [Filipino workers overseas] remittances will help us have a better BoP performance which would lead to higher growth in reserves” Tetangco said.
