The Bank of England said mortgage approvals — a good indicator of future housing demand — rose by 74,000, only slightly above December’s record low of 72,000. Though this was still better than the consensus expectation for a fall to 70,000, this remains near historical lows and is well below the six-month average of 93,000. The central bank also found that net mortgage lending during January grew by only 7. 4 bln stg, down from December’s 8.
